Aboriginal Residency Program

UBC is the first university in Canada to have an Aboriginal Residency Program in its Faculty of Medicine. The inaugural 2002 year of this program started off with a bang with two exceptional Aboriginal residents: Dr. Evan Adams and Dr. Shannon Waters. We will seek to provide First Nations/Aboriginal medical graduates, and/or those interested in Aboriginal health care issues, with an opportunity to direct special attention in their family practice residency programs, toward the challenging health care issues facing people of Aboriginal/First Nations background. The context of this training will be communities, family practices, and hospitals, with expanded opportunity for broad experiences with First Nations patients in both the family practice context, and during elective periods. We expect to be able to provide residents with opportunities to train in family practices with a large First Nations patient population, as well as to offer opportunities for contact with public health physicians, officials, public health nurses, and others involved in the delivery of health care services to First Nations people.

An R3 Year in Aboriginal Health is also offered. Please see the attached PDF file for more information.
